3 Tips For Making Best Use of Azure File Share

Even though cloud computing has become common technology and many businesses are shifting their data to the cloud, there are still some who are new to it. And as with any new technology, when you first start using it, there are some bumps.

Azure File share is no different and many people find it difficult to use in the beginning if they have not planned ahead. In this post, we will provide you some industry tips and tricks to make the best of Azure file share so that you can comfortably use it without error.

Planning is Important

We can’t stress how much planning is important. Without a plan, you cannot jump into using technology no matter what. This is the reason why it is so important to plan before you start taking advantage of technology.

Sit down with your It team and identify what key aspects of the business will be moved to the Azure file shares and why they are being moved.

Outline the objects so that you can understand why you are using the technology in the first place or whether there is something better available. Once you have identified this you can start making a plan for implementation.

SMB 3 is Better Than SMB 2

While Azure File Shares can be accessed with SMB 2.1, it is better to use SMB 3.0 instead. You need to keep in mind that any client that is still using SMB 2.1 is able only to access it from the same region as the Azure Region. The connection is also not encrypted that way so make sure to use the latest SMB.

Don’t Forget to Open Port 445

If you suffer from connection issues, your port 445 is blocked. This is an error at the local level and you may have to get in touch with your ISP to figure out a workaround. If you migrated to Azure through a certified Microsoft partner such as Henson Group, then you should not be facing this problem.

If your in-house team managed the migration, then you may have to get in touch with your ISP to allow or disallow access from this port. Save time by working with a Microsoft partner instead.

Need To Migrate to Azure Smoothly?

Azure migrations can be a tricky business for most small and medium businesses since they don’t typically have large IT teams working behind them. This is why it is important to move to a cloud through a company that helps you manage the transition phase.

Henson Group is one of the best places to start. our migration practice helps customers migrate from on-premise VMware/Hyper-V, Colo such as Rackspace, or other clouds like AWS to a Microsoft Azure Datacenter or Azure Stack Infrastructures.  This team also helps clients migrate existing workloads in Azure IaaS to Azure PaaS including SQL Server to Azure SQL Database, SQL SSIS to Data Factory, SQL SSRS/Tableau to PowerBI, Data Warehouses to Cosmos DB, Azure SQL Database Tables to Data Lake, and many others.
